Having reached the limits of their legacy platforms, one of the largest online game companies in the world asked Neosynapse to reboot both their data warehouse and business intelligence capability to put them back on the data fast track.

The Problem.

The client had built their data warehouse on an open source platform to save costs.  As data volumes grew and transaction times shrank, performance demands exceeded the legacy platform’s design limitations.  Many work-arounds were applied over the years to extend the life of the original platform, but finally there were no more patches left.  A reboot was required.

The Solution.

A three-phase selection process was designed to identify the best vendor in each of two categories: data warehousing and business intelligence.  Top vendors in each category were invited to compete for business, including Oracle, IBM, Teradata, Microstrategy, SAS, as well as many other smaller companies.  Each vendor provided written responses and live presentations.  Winning vendors were invited to install their product in the customer’s lab and perform a set of tests designed to examine each product in a neutral way.  The top two vendors in each category were invited to prepare Total Cost of Ownership bids for final selection.

The Results.

Neosynapse led the client and vendor teams were led through the selection process in four months.  At the end of the process it was clear to everyone that the winning vendors were the best combination of price and features given the client’s needs.  Because the winning vendors products were already installed at the client site, full implementation began immediately upon vendor selection.  Neosynapse was invited to stay as part of the transition team to assist in decommissioning the legacy systems and moving all business intelligence and data warehousing activity to the newly selected platforms.
